the rampant advertising in singapore is indeed astonishing. however, i find that this is so in a totally different manner.
advertising in the media is a double edged sword.
personally, i find it disturbing that media is so pervasive.
is it healthy for us to be confronted with ads every step of our lives?
true, advertising is helpful as it provides us with information on what goods and services are available.
it thus gives us more choice.

however, there comes a point where the blade turns against us.
yes, sometimes i indeed feel world weary at the constant onslaught of advertisements.
i think "oh its yet another annoying ad."
advertising is indeed beneficial, but only in small amounts.

and about the reply?
yes, i greatly agree that the prevalence of sms lingo is a major contributing factor towards the declining standards of english in singapore.
but it is not the only factor, as we must not consider each factor separately.
i feel that it's because people are now learning sms lingo at a younger age, even before they can form proper sentences.
i sms a lot too, yet i can still speak proper english. sad to say, this does not go for many of my compadres (i sound like a fucking commie lol.)

well lotsa ppl wonder why i hate the mainstream.
well, here it is.

REASONS WHY I HATE THE MAINSTREAM.

1) i don't like being spoonfed my likes and dislikes.
i dont like how the mainstream tells people "here, this is cool. everybody's doing it. follow this if you wanna be cool too." why should we let people dictate us? if you happen to like it, go ahead. but you shouldnt follow it blindly.

blind acceptance is a sign. of stupid fools who stand in line.

2) emphasis on looks.
i dont think its healthy that the mainstream places such a huge emphasis on increasingly unattainable "fashion" ideals. shouldn't quality ofcharacter be more important than looks? people may often look plain or such, but they are sometimes really nice. for example william. he's just average looking. but he's damn nice as a person. h's more or less my best friend. conversely, yuxuan is (apparently) good looking. nut he's callous and arrogant, amongst other flaws.

3) emphasis on conformity.
i dont like ho people all strive to "fit in". why should we change our beliefs, looks and ideals to fit into a society? that's bullshit.

4) trivialisation of cultures.
i dont think it is respectful to co-opt a culture's style just for the image. it reeks of blatant exploitation. for example goth and punk (or at least the mainstream's interpretation of it eg. good (???) charlotte) are cool. suddenly 77th street sells misfits belt buckles. most of those who buy them dont even know of the misfits. i ACTUALLY listen to and LIKE the misfits, yet i dont own a misfits belt buckle. and anyway, its stupid to think you can turn metal/b-boy/punk or such overnight.
what else? cultural icons worn by idiots who dont know a thing about them. polling stones vintage shirts. sid vicious used as a synonym for punk. it just turns my stomach inside out.

5) shallow themes.
i dont think it is exactly very intelligent to write a ton of pop songs that are just so formulaic. seriously, most of the songs are about love/sex. seriously, there should be wider themes for a CULTURE. doesnt it get sickening to hear so many songs about the same things?

6) commercialisation.
the mainstream is VERY commercial. they make it so blatant. seriously. bands i signed not because of technical ability but because of marketability. a band can totally suck, but if the record label think they can be sold, they're in. simpleplan for instance.

there you have it. feel free to flame me, but only if supported by rational arguments.

anyway, i hate it when people think metal or punk=MCR, fall out boy or crap bands like that. they are NOTHING like the real deal. where's the attitude? where's the aggression. we dont need posers in our subcultures.

The proposed solutions to global warming in may be legion, but in essence could all be summed up like thus; cut down on emission of greenhouse gases such as methane. However, this cannot be accomplished without cooperation from the masses.

Global warming is everybody’s problem, and the solution must come from all of us. We should all do our part to reduce our emission of greenhouse gases. As a student, we can make changes to our lifestyles to aid this effort. For example, we can take public transport instead of private vehicles as much as possible. Since the number of buses each day is fixed, why not latch onto this service instead of contributing further to global warming by using private vehicles? Also, we can boycott products that are not marked environmentally friendly. Though these actions alone are weak, they can be strong in solidarity with other environmentally conscious people. Hence, if we all do our part, we can battle against the inevitable apocalypse that is global warming.

and have i mentioned that they're a nation that emphasises CONFORMITY?

3) how they try to cutify everything.
i hate cute. it seems to convey a sense of weakness and a desire to be accepted and loved.
thats weakness. i've got it too duh. but can we at least make it not so blatant?

4) the japanese language.
i hate those anime purists who only watch it in japanese when there are dubbed versions.
and i hate people who spout japanese phrases in the presence of those who dont speak languages.

5) weird impossible hairstyles.
